Andrew Barrymore was born on February 22, 1975 in Los Angeles, CA to Jaid and John Drew Barrymore, and like most actresses, started her road to stardom by making cameo appearances in movies such as Altered States and Bogie, a TV movie. Only -- she started at age four.
When I was five years old (and Drew was six), I and most of America caught our first glimpse of her on the big screen as the adorable and enchanting Gertie in Steven Spielberg's E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial. For her performance in the film, she was honored with the Youth in Film Award and a British Academy of Film and Television Artists (BAFTA) Award nomination for Most Outstanding Newcomer.
From there her career took off with movies such as Irreconcilable Differences, for which she recieved a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actress; Stephen King's Firestarter; ABC movie-of-the-week Babes in Toyland; and King's Cat's Eye, a three-segment movie written especially for Barrymore in which she played five different roles!
She continued her career from 1987-1989 with CBS movie Conspiracy of Love, See You in the Morning, and Far from Home.
In 1992, the rising 16-year-old plowed through six movies to add to the list. The first was Waxwork II: Lost in Time, followed by Sketch Artist, and Poision Ivy. After an appearance in Motorama she moved on to Guncrazy for which she recieved a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress. This high-rolling year ended with none other than the TV mini-series, 2000 Malibu Road.
She carried her sucess into 1993 with Wayne's World 2, No Place to Hide, Doppelganger, and topping it off with ABC's movie-of-the-week, The Amy Fisher Story, which became the season's highest-rated TV movie.
In March of '94, Drew married Jeremy Thomas only to be divorced in May of that same year.
More recently, Barrymore has appeared Inside the Goldmine and Bad Girls. This summer she starred in with Chris O'Donnell in the dramatic Mad Love, only to leave room for an appearance as Sugar in the blockbuster Batman Forever.
So what can we expect next from Drew? Who knows? We've seen pretty unexpected things on David Letterman. All we can do is wait.
Meanwhile, I'll mention a few other credits to Barrymore's name. She appeared in the TV movie Suddenly Love as the CBS Schoolbreak Special 15 and Getting Straight. Ok, that's about it for now....
